Lakota War Bonnet

This magnificent headdress is based on the iconic plains Indian war bonnet. This type of headdress originally appeared among the Sioux and Cheyenne tribes, but today has been adopted by just about every tribe across the country.

The bonnet shown here is a very detailed and authentic looking piece, few replicas of this high level of quality are available today. the bonnet is made up of 28 genuine wild turkey tail feathers, measuring about 15 inches each, and wrapped at the base with red wool trade cloth and yellow cotton thread which holds in place the dozens of dyed fluffs. Each of the feather tips feature a rabbit fur spot and a red-dyed horse hair tuft - just like the originals. The feathers are attached to a hand-stitched elk hide crown, which is covered in rabbit fur, and has a major plume - a hand-painted simulated immature golden eagle feather which is bead-wrapped at the base and tipped with dyed fluffs. The brow-band is 5 rows of genuine porcupine quill work; it is surrounded by small brass beads and hawk bells. At both ends of the brow-band is a shell disc centered with 2 red glass beads
and hung with hand-dyed silk ribbons, brass cones and beads, and rabbit fur strips that are cut and dyed to resemble ermine pelts. The entire piece has been carefully antiqued.

Kicking Bird's Headdress

Screen comparison 1          Screen comparison 2

This headdress is an exact replica of the one worn by Graham Greene in the role of Kicking Bird in the film Dances With Wolves. Meticulous study of screen shots and attention to detail make this item perfect for a collector of movie props.

The headdress is constructed of 8 exquisitely handpainted imitation eagle feathers which are the closest to the look of the real thing as we have seen. It also features a major plume, made from a genuine bronze turkey feather that is partially stripped, the quill base wrapped in red cotton, just like the original prop. Various other feathers and red dyed fluffs are also incorporated. At the center of the headdress is a hand shaped disc of melon shell with a genuine turquoise nugget, from which hangs aged brass beads and cones with more red dyed fluffs. This center piece is mounted on a rawhide disc with buckskin hair ties. A beautiful replica.

War Bonnet

Close-up     front view    side view

This war bonnet is constructed from thirty commercially dyed turkey feathers. These extra large feathers, each about 14 inches long, are good simulations of eagle feathers. The "cap," size medium to large, is made of leather and is hemmed. It is decorated with a loom-beaded brow band and two hand-beaded rosettes, as well as solid brass beads and glass beads. The two side drops are made of red ribbon and genuine rabbit fur. The feathers are decorated with red dyed fluffs and are tipped with horsehair. A good economy reproduction.
