Gunstock War Club

close-up 1              close-up 2             close-up 3

Gunstock clubs were predominantly used by north eastern woodland tribes from the mid 1700's onwards, and later on they appeared among the plains Indians. Originally the clubs were used in battle , a devastating weapon, and a clever ruse because from a distance it looked like a carrier of the club was armed with a musket. Gunstock clubs have since been used ceremonially to this day.
The above piece is hand-carved from solid, very highly figured curly maple with a rubbed linseed oil finish, it measures 34 inches long, and has a good weighty heft. The nicely pitted blade is 5 inches long. The club has a hand-carved sawtooth design at the butt, and is decorated with antiqued brass tacks. An excellent feature to this piece is the elk hide shoulder strap - made with Czech glass, and clam shell wampum, the design is based on the powder horn strap worn by Hawkeye in the film Last of The Mohicans. With its authentic looking patina (including a few little nicks and scratches), this club is a beautiful reproduction.

Knife and beaded sheath

Close-up 1          Close-up 2              knife

This style of knife sheath, known as a cuttout sheath was very popular throughout the plains and plateau tribes, and was most commonly coupled with "trade knives" obtained from white traders. This example is based on an actual museum specimen. The sheath is 11 x 5 inches and made of elk hide with a stiff rawhide insert and
features red wool trade cloth binding on the edges, and is further decorated with aged brass tacks and buckskin fringe. The included knife is a vintage Ontario brand trade style knife and is 11 inches long overall.

A note on the bead work; the beads used on this sheath (with the exception of the black and the blue) are genuine antique Italian seed beads produced in Venice up to 150 years ago. These are the actual beads that were traded for with Native Americans through the second half of the nineteenth century
.

Item #20
Spontoon tomahawk

close-up 1       close-up 2       close-up 3

The spontoon tomahawk gets its name from the French sponton, a lance used in the 17th and 18th centuries. The smaller blades on either side of the main blade give the weapon the look of a military fork, or trident. These unique tomahawks are based on this design. The blade, or head, on the above example was purchased by us in its present condition and is of unknown age and origin. It was originally a pipe spontoon, but the pipe bowl was broken off at some point prior to coming into our possession. The handle is hand-carved from very highly figured curly maple - stained with aqua fortis, a nitric acid based stain used by gunsmiths since the 1700's. This tomahawk is decorated with a buckskin drop, beaded with actual antique Venetian seed beads. The head is 9 inches long, and the handle is 21 inches. A very elegant piece.
